Can Barbers Work in Salons in South Carolina?
In South Carolina, licensed Barbers and licensed Cosmetologists are under two different governing Boards. The Cosmetologists, Nail Technicians, Estheticians and Instructors are under the Cosmetology Board. The Barbers, Barber Instructors and Master Hair Care Specialists are under the Barber Board. In January 2022, a bill was brought and read on the SC House floor for the first time. This bill (if passed) would give the opportunity for Barbers, Barber Instructors, Hair Care Specialists and Cosmetologists to work under the same "beauty salon" roof for the first time. This would count for any licensed salon in the state. Can a nail salon in South Carolina have a Barber? Can an Esthetics salon (spa) in South Carolina have a Barber? If you have a current salon license under the Cosmetology Board, and you are interested in having a currently licensed Barber, Barber Instructor or Hair Care Specialist (Under Barber Board) work in your salon, you are now able to bring them on board.
This law was eventually passed in May of 2022 and you can read it on the official Legislature of South Carolina website HERE.
